Frequently Asked Questions
Weddings
How far ahead should I book my floral designer?
It varies but like anything if you have a favourite style and a particular designer in mind the earlier the better. It’s not unusual to be booking 2 years ahead. A deposit secures your date.
What do I get when I book a floral designer?
I get asked this question a lot, alongside “why are wedding flowers so expensive” Aside from the flowers, when you book a good floral designer for your wedding you’re buying:
A personal consultation – capturing the vibe of your day, ensuring all of your design elements work together and understanding your personal style and budget is very important to ensure you get your dream wedding and that your day runs as smoothly as possible.
Skill and experience - of your designer and their team, who should understand seasonality, availability of flowers, and will work with you to help and guide you on how to best dress your venue. Styling and floral design makes your space come alive. It can change the space from functional into a memorable experience for you and your guests. It can make a large space cosy or enhance beautiful features of the room such as beams or a fireplace, it can soften and add texture. Captured in your photographs forever. Your choice of designer here can really make the difference so choose carefully.
Quality – it goes without saying that quality flowers, rich in scent and colour are important, price comparisons alone are difficult in the floral industry as density and quality of flowers can vary hugely, make sure to look at previous work when comparing designers. At Heather & Moss we use a wide range of high quality, beautiful flowers from UK growers, as much as possible, supplemented by flowers from the dutch flower markets.
Support on the day - If you want a set up on staircases, arches, hanging installations or florals moving between your ceremony and wedding breakfast, this takes time and your venue might have a limited time for turnaround. Your floral designer will factor in paying freelancers to help set up, clear up or to move your florals.
Travel time – Don’t forget your designer will need to get to the venue with all of your florals and often build them on site. It’s not unusual to be leaving home at 3 or 4am!
Sustainability - if it is important to you to minimise environmental damage, check the credentials of your designer. Using floral foam in designs is not something we do. All our designs are built without floral foam that is full of microplastics and is toxic to waterways. We also use paper and cardboard packaging and all bouquets & buttonholes are delivered in glass vases to minimise the use of plastic.
How should I decide on a designer for my wedding or event?
Recommendations, reviews and comparison sites such as Hitched. Also look at social media, do the images look aligned to your style? and finally your budget (rather that price range) Some florists and stylists have a minimum spend, generally this will be in their enquiry form or in the terms on their website. We don’t have a minimum spend at Heather & Moss.
It is a good idea to have an idea of your budget. This is important so that your floral designer can make design choices that align. Recognising that a wedding is often the first time you may be looking for styling and florals so may not have a clue how much you need to spend! We can help you with this. As a guide, for a small wedding with bridal bouquet, 2 bridesmaids, 4 buttonholes you should expect to spend approximately £400. The price will depend on the style and complexity, type of flowers and distance to deliver.
Why Heather & Moss?
We specialise in natural, wild and relaxed florals (think not neat and regimented but as nature intended!). We source the most beautiful flowers and foliage from local growers were possible and supplement with flowers from the dutch flower markets. I was trained in sustainable floristry methods and so have a focus on minimising our environmental footprint.
Every wedding is completely bespoke and you are guaranteed a personal and hands on design service.
What’s the process?
You’re here, this is great news!
At Heather & Moss we suggest a completely no obligation initial chat so we can find out about what you like, your style, discuss your venue and also what sort of vibe you want to create. We will want to know about you as a couple and what you have in mind. There is no minimum spend so it may be a bouquet and a buttonhole for an elopement or a full venue decorated with beautiful florals with large installations. Don’t worry if you don’t know yet we can talk it through and we can give you a rough idea of prices. It’s a good idea to have an idea of your rough budget.
If we think we can work together and want to progress we will then put together a bespoke quote. If you’re happy with it a 20% non-refundable, deposit secures your date and we agree the quote as minimum spend. We will then create a moodboard that we will adjust together until you are completely happy with the designs. You can add to the brief up to 6 weeks before your wedding when the final balance is due. Usually we’ll come out to your venue to check out the light, the space and make any recommendations so that you get maximum impact from your florals.
On the day we will make sure everything is delivered and set up, including delivering your bouquet to you.
The following day we will collect any vases/installations/candles etc and can help you decide what to do with your flowers, for a small charge we can batch them up as posies for family members for example.
Do you provide styling services?
Yes – as well as providing floral services we can also provide candles, some linens, tealights, lanterns and can source props. We also work with a number of stylists across the industry and are happy to recommend for full styling including linens, crockery, glassware services or wedding planners.
Do you have a minimum spend?
At Heather & Moss we have no minimum spend and each wedding is completely bespoke in pricing as it will depend on the seasonality of flowers and the style and sizes. As a rough guide expect to pay in the region of £150 for a wedding bouquet.
Whilst we will always offer ways to get the most from your budget, such as reusing the flowers between the ceremony and wedding breakfast, we might ask for a rough guide of your budget, it helps us manage expectations and offer designs that are aligned.
